How To Pick A Puppy

Some of the questions you should ask the breeder before deciding on a puppy.

How old will the pups have to be before leaving mommy?
A puppy should NEVER leave before 7 weeks of age.
How many breeds do you have?
A reputable breeder will have one breed preferably, 2 at most. We only raise German Shepherds and have no other breed.
How many dogs (males and females) do you own and breed?
Good question to find out if it is a puppy mill. Puppy mills are not interested in puppies health.Dam should never be breed more than once per year in order to breed health pups.
How many litters do you have a year?
Depending on how many females. No more than once per year per female. Should not own more than 5 adult dogs total in order to give good socialization and care.
What do you feed your adult dogs? Puppies? When are puppies weaned?
Shouldn't be weaned before 5-6 weeks however supplement at 4 weeks is good as long as the puppies are still nursing also.  Our dogs and puppies get Royal Canin - a dog food specifically designed for the German Shepherd breed - it is not cheap food and can be bought specifically for adults and specifically for puppies. Cheap dog food is filled with fillers and usually does not contain the vitamins needed to give a dog a long healthy life.
Am I welcome to come and visit the puppies at any time?
Not until the puppies have received their first round of shots. Diseases can be transferred from a sick dog rubbing against someones clothing and then transferred from visitors clothing to puppy.
Do the pups see a vet before leaving their home?
Puppies should be seen shortly after birth,within the first week. Again between 2 and 3 weeks of age. At 6 weeks for first round of shots. Puppies should be seen again by vet at 9 weeks, if breeder keeps them until then. Our puppies have 4 vet checks, first round of shots and dewormed if adopted before 9 weeks.
Can you give me the name and phone number of your vet?
A good breeder has no problem giving out this info and will also give documentation on vet visits. We give authorization so that our vet may speak to you as well as we give copies of all vet check information.
Do you have a health guarantee that I can see now? (Should be for at least one year,read carefully) Our guarantee is on our puppy contract page.
Health guarantee should be for a minimum of 1 year.
Can I see the pedigrees of the dam and sire?
A breeder should give you this information if you are a serious buyer although some may not give the identification numbers until puppy is purchased due to scammers sometimes attempting to "steal" identities. Breeder should give purchaser all documented info at the time of purchase.
Do you own both sire and dam?
Great opportunity to see both dogs traits in photos and in person at pickup.
May I see several photos of both?
Breeders that love their dogs are proud and take many photos.
May I see several photos of puppies,past and present?
If your talking to a breeder, this helps solidify they are in fact who they say they are. Ask for many photos taken in different areas to prove your puppy has not been copied from someone elses website. If you have picked out your puppy, ask for weekly photo updates until you receive puppy.
Ask questions about that particular breed. Good breeders educate themselves and continue learning if they care about improving the breed and breeding only quality puppies!
The breeder should be knowledgable and spout of information. Ask ask ask,keep asking.
If you are talking to a less than quality breeder, the more questions you ask ,the more easily you will know what type breeder you are dealing with.

                                                                                        IMPORTANT

Be very wary of puppy mills. Puppy mill owners are concerned with money - not the breed or health of the puppies. If the puppy seems listless and uninterested in its surroundings - Don't walk but RUN from the breeder! All puppies are naturally energetic and curious. If a breeder claims to have ratings or registered dogs and sales cheap - again be wary. Registered healthy dogs come with a price because they are not cheap to breed. Ask questions about supplements, food, vitamins, vet checks and shots. If breeder claims to give all shots themselves, again it's time to run unless they are a licensed vet. If you see that a breeder is advertising a litter of J-10, this means that it was the 10th litter that was born in the year 2010. If a breeder advertises that they will give you immunization info at pickup - careful this is a red flag and usually means that the puppy has not seen a vet that can mean that they puppies have had NO immunizations but they will give you "info" on what immunizations are needed. If a breeder tells you that it could be months before they can give you the AKC registration papers then run from this breeder. We have never had AKC take over 2 weeks getting our registration papers to us. If you do not get registration papers at pick up, chances are you never will and the puppy may not even be AKC registrable. If your getting a Cheaper price dog because thats what you can afford , add in the vet expenses that the dog has not received and you will find out that your actually going to pay more for a dog that hasn't been seen by a vet. The puppies that have not been vet checked can cost more in the long run because they did not get proper health care at the beginning of their lives. A puppy should also receive supplemental nutrition beginning at 4 weeks of age for proper bone development. Puppies should not be allowed outdoors until their first round of shots have been given to avoid picking up contagious disease.
